Why Ceylon Tea Is a Premium Export
Ceylon tea — produced exclusively in Sri Lanka — commands a premium in global markets due to its protected geographical indication (GI) status. Only tea grown and manufactured in Sri Lanka can carry the iconic Lion Logo, enforced by the Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB).
As of 2025, Sri Lanka exports approximately 280–300 million kilograms of tea per year, with the major destinations being the UAE, Russia, Turkey, Iran, China and the UK.
Regulatory Requirements
Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Approval
All tea for export must be inspected and approved by the SLTB. This covers:
Phytosanitary Certificate
Issued by the Department of Agriculture, the Phytosanitary Certificate confirms the tea is free from pests and diseases. Required by most importing countries.
Health Certificate
For food-importing markets (EU, USA, Japan, Australia), a Health Certificate from the Ministry of Health may be required, confirming compliance with maximum residue levels (MRLs) for pesticides.
Certificate of Origin
A Certificate of Origin (CoO) issued by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce or the National Chamber of Commerce confirms the tea's Sri Lankan origin. Necessary for preferential duty treatment under trade agreements.
