Full Container Load (FCL) means your cargo occupies an entire shipping container — typically a 20-foot (TEU) or 40-foot (FEU) unit. You pay for the whole container regardless of how much space your cargo uses.

Less than Container Load (LCL) means your cargo is consolidated with other shippers' goods inside a shared container. You pay only for the space (CBM) and weight your cargo occupies.

For Sri Lanka importers, the tipping point is typically around 12–15 CBM. Below that volume, LCL is almost always cheaper despite the CFS (Container Freight Station) handling fees in Colombo. Above that, the per-CBM cost of FCL drops below LCL rates, and you gain transit time advantages.
